“Best Instrumental Band of the Decade” - Irish American News
“A showcase of tastefulness that combines the highest level of musicianship in Irish music in a seamless collaboration with some of America’s finest musicians” - Martin Hayes
Lauded as the ‘Best Instrumental Irish Band of the Decade’ by the Irish American News, the Brock McGuire Band presents GREEN GRASS BLUE GRASS, a cross-cultural collaboration which celebrates the music of the Irish and Appalachian traditions. Paul Brock on button accordion and melodeon, and Manus McGuire on fiddle, both from Co. Clare, are joined on tenor banjo and mandolin by Co. Galway’s multiple All-Ireland champion Enda Scahill, and on keyboards by acclaimed composer and arranger Denis Carey from Co. Tipperary. Their tight blend of instruments emphasize Irish music, but include impressive arrangements that feature Old Time American, French-Canadian and other Celtic traditions. Recorded at Skaggs Studio in Nashville TN, this album received it’s debut performance at the Grand Old Opry this past March.
“With the help of such bluegrass luminaries as Ricky Skaggs, Aubrey Haynie, Bryan Sutton, and Mark Fain, they charge through a program of Irish and American tunes from such classics as “Wheel Hoss” and “Indian Springs” to “Wild Fiddler’s Rag” to Irish classics like “Moving Cloud.” Often played in sets, American and Irish tunes pop in unusual juxtapositions. Two such sets include “Darling Girl From County Clare”/”Turkey In The Straw” and “Fish On A Snag”/“Wheel Hoss”/“Ships Are Sailing.” Interestingly, what they call “Fish On A Snag” is called “Mississippi Sawyer” in the States. There are wonderfully moody pieces interspersed between the rollicking sets. Their reading of the late Kentucky fiddler, Hiram Stamper’s “Chinquapin Hunting” is a pure joy to hear. This is a treasure of Transatlantic ear candy for your listening
